How To Use KDN

How To Use KDN

This is a collection of instructions and procedures for using KDN. It is an on-going project and is updated regularly.

Knowledge Base Versus Community

One of the most important things to understand is the difference between the Knowledge Base and the Community content.

Knowledge Base: This is "official" Kollmorgen content. Posts made here are done by individuals authorized by Kollmorgen to provide customer-facing information. Moderators, and Content Contributors should post original content in here.

Community: The Community, which includes Questions, Discussions, and Feature Requests, is largely user-generated. Anybody who registers with KDN can post to these sections. Moderators and Content Contributors may respond to posts in these sections, or if they wish to start a discussion may do so.

Navigating The How To

To the left, in the sidebar, is a tree view of all topics.

If you have any suggestions on future topics, please submit a Feature Request. This site is for you, so let it help you.

What is the purpose and scope of KDN?

What is the purpose and scope of KDN?

Purpose

KDN is here for you; to help you learn, and to foster communication. KDN is used to communicate with Kollmorgen resources as well as other users.

Scope

Most of the information is centered around the current Kollmorgen drives (AKD, S300, S700), motors (AKM, AKMH, CDDR, et al), controls (PCMM, AKD PDMM) and KAS. We add new content and products all the time and the Knowledge Base has a complete list of the products we fully support.

Our site and support do not end with these products, they are not the only things which can be discussed here. The Community is a fairly open forum and the Knowledge Base has information for products beyond the basic scope.

Etiquette and Rules for KDN

Etiquette and Rules for KDN

Thank you for participating in this community. As it is a community, we have a few guidelines for participation. The guidelines are presented in two version, The One Minute Version which provides very general guidelines, and The Long Version which is the "TL;DR" (Too Long;Didn't Read) version, which offers advice and some ground rules.

The One Minute Version

First and foremost: As this is a resource for Kollmorgen and its customers (both company-to-customer, and customer-to-customer), keep it professional. Be courteous, and do not post anything that you would not want the world to see or know that it came from you. For a more complete set of guidelines, see "The Long Version".

Second: This is a publicly accessible space. Be aware of your privacy and your company's intellectual property (IP) when posting to the Community. As this is a place where you can get assistance from Kollmorgen, you will need to share certain types of information with Kollmorgen. If you are requesting help, a Kollmorgen rep will be assigned to your request and will contact you privately.

Third: Registering on the site is required for certain types of assistance. Registration information is stored in our system, but user information is kept strictly within the company. We do not, and never will share, distribute, or sell any of your information. The information is used strictly to support you, our customer. Please see our Privacy Statement if you have any questions.

Fourth: This site encourages discussion, including differences of opinion, but Kollmorgen reserves the right to remove content which is contrary to the sites rules, such as offensive or defamatory posts, and posts which are deemed to be solicitations.

Fifth:  Do not post any controlled information. This includes older versions of firmware which do not meet export compliance rules. Any posts which include this type of information will be removed. See the article Dual Use for information on controlled firmware.

The Long Version

Be respectful of other members (including moderators) and their opinions, even if you disagree with them. We encourage subjective opinions and discussions of individual experiences and perceptions. A difference of opinion can be expressed without insults and bullying. Discussions about moderation should take place via private message, and not be posted on the site.

Always remember that any personal information you reveal can be obtained and used by others. Please do not post personal information that you do not want to be publicly available, and do not post the personal information of others.

Please post each question or request for technical assistance in one thread only. If you post the same question in more than one place in the community, it will be very difficult for other members to unite to assist you.

While using the Site you will comply with all applicable laws, rules and regulations. In addition, Kollmorgen expects users of KDN to respect the rights and dignity of others. Your use of KDN is conditioned on your compliance with the rules of conduct set forth in this section; any failure to comply may also result in termination of your access to KDN. You agree that you will not:

  • Use harassing, threatening, insulting, abusive, violent, discriminatory (racist, sexist, etc.), hateful, hostile, obscene, profane, or defamatory language. This applies to usernames and subject lines as well as to the text of your posts, and includes the use of characters such as *, #, or $ to replace letters in otherwise prohibited language.

Searching through KDN

Searching through KDN

Search is built into the core of KDN; every major page has the search function at or near the top of the page. When you start typing, KDN will automatically show you suggested searches, based on your entry.
KDN_Search.png

Search results are based on the article title, tags that have been applied to the article, and by text in the article. For example, searching for "servo" will return many hundreds of results.

To help you find what you really need, filters may be applied to search results. The left side of the results page includes three filter categories: Content Type, Tags, and Post Date. Selecting any of these will help refine the results.

Using the Downloads Tool

Using the Downloads Tool

Overview

Finding what you need to download can be a daunting task. That is why we have created the KDN Downloads tool. This simple tool lets you focus on what you're trying to find. The tool has four columns or categories, and a Results section below. Making a selection in a category will modify the Results content based on your selection.

Using the Downloads Tool

Any combination of columns may be selected, but only one item per column may be selected. For example, clicking Product:AKD and Revision:1.11 will display all content (documentation and software) that is available for AKD 1.11. This includes all languages. You can refine your search by adding Language:EN to refine your search to content in English. This will produce a much more manageable list.

The Results List

The results of your search are displayed in a tabular format, displaying the File name, its Language, the File Type, its Size, and its Release Date. The results may be sorted by clicking on any of these except File Type. Each item includes a description. Clicking on the bold blue file name will immediately begin downloading (or opening) that file.

Questions, Discussions, and Feature Requests

Questions, Discussions, and Feature Requests

In the Community page you'll find links to "Ask a Question", "Start a Discussion", and "Propose a Feature". This topic discusses the purpose and differences between them.

About Community Content

Questions, Discussions, and Feature Requests are, generally speaking, by and for users. Anyone who is registered may make a submission or respond to a post. The Community content is different than what is found in the Knowledge Base, which is official Kollmorgen content.

Ask a Question

Questions are used when you want to get some technical help. Perhaps you need to understand the differences between various hardware, or to understand how a function works. Questions generate case reports which Tech Support can respond to, or users online may respond to.

Start a Discussion

Discussions are similar to the concept of a forum, i.e. they're for whatever you want to talk about. Perhaps you have an interesting project you'd like to share, or want to discuss industry trends, or have some advice.

Propose a Feature

Do you have a great idea? Let us know, we'd love to hear it. This is the place to do it. Other users can vote on your idea ... if we like an idea or see that many users like an idea, it may get developed.

Creating a Post

  1. Go to the Community page.
  2. Click Ask a Question, Start a Discussion, or Propose a Feature.
  3. Add a Title, which should be descriptive of the post's purpose.
  4. Write the post in the Body section. There is a set of WYSIWYG ("What You See Is What You Get") tools to help you with formatting the content. It is recommended that you leave the Text format as "Full HTML".
  5. Select Groups audience. This will associate the Article with a product or other type of group. "None" is available for general topics.
  6. Click Save.

About Comments and Answers

About Comments and Answers

Comments may be made on articles in the Knowledge Base, as well as to Discussions, Feature Requests, and Questions in the Community. These are plain text messages meant to aid discussion.

Answers are applicable only to Questions in the Community. Anybody may answer a question and the community can vote on the answers. The person who asks the question may select the best answer from all responses.

In the event that a Kollmorgen Support representative responds with an Answer, it will be set as the best answer.

Voting on Answers

Voting on Answers

Users have the ability to vote on Answers to Questions. If you see an answer which you believe answers a question accurately or has good information, yuo are encouraged to vote on the Answer. Additionally, the user who asked the Question can select the "Best Answer". If a Kollmorgen Support representative answers a Question, that answer will automatically be designated as "Best".

Voting on answers not only helps spread good information, it helps other users. When an answer is voted up (+), the user gets some points, voting an answer down (-) reduces points. Points may be used for numerous things including raning users. A user who has a lot of points probably usually provides good information.

This article discusses how to create bookmarks, subscribe to content, and share content.

Note: To perform any of these actions you must be a registered user and signed-in.

Perform the following procedure to subscribe to content.

  1. Select an article within the knowledge base to subscribe. Example: EtherCAT Bus topic.
  2. Select the Subscribe button to receive content notification updates.

Perform the following procedure to share content with others.

  1. Select an article within the knowledge base to share. Example: AKD Profinet Fieldbus Support Landing Page
